Gift baskets and Easter flowers – Christchurch celebrates

21 March 2023

Ever wondered why the date of Easter changes every year? Easter is celebrated on the first Sunday following the first full moon after the vernal equinox (the first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere). Whereas the fixed vernal equinox is on 20th or 21st March, the full moon date is determined by the lunar cycle. A complete lunar cycle takes 29.5 days which, in comparison with the solar cycle of 365.25 days, means the calendars are out of sync and the reason why date of Easter is a moving feast falling on any Sunday between 22nd March and the 25th April.

Attention: This year the date for Easter falls on Sunday April 9th 2023.

The date of Easter is significant for the Christian faith as it marks the resurrection of Jesus representing the renewal life, hope and faith, and flowers embody these sentiments. The tradition of gifting at Easter has also been adopted by non-religious people as a way to celebrate the holiday and express joy, goodwill and gratitude.

Why do people send Easter flowers?

Symbolism: Flowers symbolise new beginnings, rebirth and renewal, which is why a fresh flowers delivery is used to mark the full spectrum of human experience – flowers to celebrate the birth of a baby through to funeral flowers. Easter is also associated with specific colours:

·        White Easter flowers represent innocence, purity, and God's glory.

·        Red Easter flowers symbolise the passion, sacrifice, and martyrdom.

·        Purple Easter flowers recognise sacrifice, penance, and humility.

Gratitude: Flowers express gratitude and appreciation without a word being spoken; a visual symbol and reminder of the gratitude that you feel for the recipient and the positive impact they have had on your life.

Decoration: Religion aside, Easter is celebrated with a long weekend from work and a welcome opportunity for a gathering of friends and family. Adding colour, beauty and natural charm, flowers are fantastic way make the home a hospitable space.

·        Fresh flower arrangements throughout the social space

·        Stunning fresh flower wreaths to make your entrance welcoming

·        Floral centrepieces to decorate the table to enhance the colour scheme

Feel-good factor: Arranging for a flower delivery for any occasion brings joy and happiness, brightening the recipients day – but it also makes you feel good too. Don’t underestimate the feel-good factor of gifting!

The timeless joy of flowers is that they have a way of expressing feelings words sometimes cannot, and when it comes to wedding anniversaries, a thoughtfully chosen flower bouquet speaks volumes. Whether you are celebrating your first wedding anniversary, or a lifetime of togetherness, flowers are a heartfelt way to say, ‘I love you’. Why give flowers for an anniversary? Beyond their obvious natural beauty , a fresh flower delivery is incredibly romantic, making the recipient feel loved and valued. Research has shown that just the sight and the smell of flowers, changes the brain chemistry leading to more positive feelings and emotions – the perfect start to wedding anniversary celebrations. Flowers for each anniversary year Flowers have long been a traditional anniversary gift because they symbolise love, beauty, and the passage of time. Every year of marriage is an achievement and unique, and so are the flowers traditionally associated with it. · 1st anniversary flowers – carnations The first year of marriage is often filled with passion and new beginnings, which is why carnations are a fitting comparison to a new marriage. These vibrant flowers represent youthful love and admiration. · 5th anniversary flowers – daisies Daisies symbolise innocence and loyal love. They’re ideal for a fifth anniversary, representing the blossoming trust and partnership that comes after a few years of marriage. · 10th anniversary flowers – daffodils Daffodils are a symbol of rebirth and new beginnings but are also strong and resilient. Celebrating a decade together with daffodils is a way to show how your relationship has grown and evolved. · 25th anniversary flowers – iris The iris represents strength, courage and admiration, qualities to suit a couple who has spent 25 years building a strong and enduring marriage.

The team at Court Florist love this time of year, spring is on the way. As the winter chills fade, Christchurch comes alive with a fresh vibrancy, and so do the flowers. Spring is the season of renewal, growth and fresh joyful energy, and the flowers that bloom at this time of year reflect these themes perfectly. Whether you’re surprising a loved one with a Christchurch flower delivery , celebrating a special occasion, or simply buying yourself a bunch of flowers for some cheer, a bouquet of fresh spring flowers is just the ticket. If you are looking to order flowers online or from a visit to Court Florist, Victoria St, there are plenty to choose from to suit all colourways, budget and style. What flowers are available in NZ during spring? Nothing says “spring” like a burst of colour and fragrance from a well-arranged bouquet. A flower arrangement transforms any room and has the power to add a touch of contemporary classic elegance or even a vintage vibe, depending on your choice of spring flowers. Court Florist’s bouquets are ideal for bringing life to your living space and creating a welcoming atmosphere. Court Florist are fortunate to offer a variety of the most beautiful flowers for a Christchurch delivery, but these are some of our favourite spring blooms: Daffodils Unofficially the first sign of spring, daffodils are celebrated for their capacity to add instant cheer. From sunny yellow to a delicate white, daffodils herald the arrival of the warmer weather. Tulips Renowned for their large, showy, cup-shaped petals and the wide array of vibrant colours they are available in, tulips are the quintessential symbol of spring. Hyacinths With their distinctive room-filling scent and stunning spikes filled with clusters of highly pigmented flowers, hyacinths remain a traditional favourite spring flower. Anemones Anemones are striking flowers known for their vibrant, delicate petals contrasted by dark centres. Available in various colours, they change dramatically in a bouquet, transforming from a tight bud to a fully open bold, eye-catching flower. Freesias Freesias are the epitome of uplifting freshness sprinkled with a charming sense of nostalgia. They are a classic spring flower with a delicate sweet citrussy fragrance. Did you know…. Freesias are fickle. They are sensitive to the ethylene gas produced by many fruits, so place them away from your fruit bowl. They also prefer room-temperature water, rather than fresh out of the tap. As one of Christchurch’s leading floral and gift retailers in Christchurch, New Zealand, Court Florist is dedicated to quality, creativity, and customer satisfaction. Whether you’re searching spring flower inspiration in Christchurch, or simply want to brighten someone’s day with a flower delivery, we have the perfect flowers for you. For centuries, flowers have used as a non-verbal way to express emotion and communicate. Court Florist’s Victoria Street florist Christchurch team create flower arrangements for a myriad of reasons that cover all aspects of life and living: from cradle to grave, for the highs and lows and ‘just because’ flowers. Sending flowers is a kind gesture, and while you don’t need a specific reason to, there are many situations that warrant sending a beautiful bouquet. Here are the 7 most popular reasons why people send flowers with Court Florist in Christchurch NZ: 1. Celebrations, achievements and milestones With thanks to the symbolism of flowers, they play a central role in celebrations and milestones. From a flower delivery of ruby red roses for a 40 th wedding anniversary, the birth of a new baby, through to extravagant wedding flowers, every occasion can be marked with special flowers. 2. Expressions of love and affection Valentine’s Day is synonymous with sending flowers to a loved one. However, Court Florist is delighted to report that romantic flower deliveries are a year-round gesture for loved up Christchurch residents, and often without occasion. Sending flowers is an incredibly romantic gesture to express love and affection and show someone they are on your mind. 3. Support and sympathy flowers Used across many faiths, flowers honour the deceased , but they are also a thoughtful way to offer condolences to a grieving family or show support to someone going through a tough time. A flower delivery is a powerful yet sensitive way to demonstrate you are there without being intrusive. 4. Thank you and appreciation Gratitude is a wonderful trait, and flowers are a beautiful way to thank someone for their kindness, help or generosity. When someone recognises that you have gone above and beyond expectations, the result is pure joy. 5. Apologies and reconciliation Some of the hardest words to say are ‘I’m sorry’. Beautiful flowers can be a sincere way to make amends and apologise to someone you have wronged. Sending flowers can be the first step to smoothing over misunderstandings and show a willingness to reconcile. 6. Seasonal greetings Dare the C-word be mentioned at this time of year? Christmas wreaths and flower arrangement deliveries bring the season’s cheer to your doorstep and are the ideal gift if you are unable to join family and friends over the holiday season. 7. Corporate flowers There is nothing like the sight and fragrance of a fresh flower delivery to create a colourful and welcoming space in a corporate environment . They create a wonderful first impression for clients but are also a powerful way to enhance the office space for employees. As a universal symbol of affection, joy, sympathy, and support, the versatility of sending flowers is impressive. They convey a wide range of emotions and messages, making them the perfect gift for almost any occasion. If you are looking for some winter cheer, nothing brightens the mood or home like a beautiful bouquet of fresh seasonal flowers . Whether you've received a stunning arrangement as a gift or treated yourself to a flower arrangement, placing your flower delivery strategically in your home maximises its impact and longevity. Placing a flower delivery in your home during winter requires a bit of thought and care, but the effort is well worth it. Here are some tips on how and where to place your flower delivery to create a cosy and vibrant sanctuary. Where should you put flowers in the home? The short answer is anywhere! The joy of flowers is they can be put in any room. There are certainly no hard and fast rules, but each room in your home serves a different purpose, so any flowers displayed can be used to elevate the room's ambiance. Living room: This is where family and friends gather and the classic location for flowers to create a strong focal point. From our Victoria Street location, Christchurch's Court Florist delivers flowers to make a bold statement. Don't be afraid of colour; from the Bright and Vibrant Bouquet to the Jewel Tones Bouquet, the glorious colours and fragrance are simply divine and deserve a central location such as a coffee table or mantelpiece for maximum visual impact. If you have a fireplace, always move the flowers so they are not too close to the heat to avoid them wilting prematurely. Dining room: A floral centrepiece on the dining table transforms a mealtime into a special occasion. Choose low arrangements to avoid obstructing the view across the table, or if you have a sideboard, they make an excellent secondary spot for a taller arrangement. If you are having a formal dinner party, choose structured contemporary flowers; for a relaxed gathering, a more whimsical display with seasonal flowers and greenery looks delightful. Kitchen: Kitchens are the heart of the home and the hub of household activity. A posy of flowers or bouquet on the benchtop or windowsill adds charm without taking up valuable workspace. Just make sure the flowers are away from direct heat sources and not in direct sunlight. Bedroom: Placing flowers on the bedside table or dresser adds a touch of romance and tranquillity to the bedroom, and a wonderful display to wake up to. Opt for subtle or lightly scented flowers to create a calming atmosphere conducive to relaxation and sleep. Where not to place your flowers Winter poses unique challenges with reduced natural light and indoor heating. Direct sunlight can be too harsh, even in winter, causing flowers to wilt; fresh flower arrangements like to receive gentle, filtered light. Similarly, avoid placing them near heating vents, fireplaces, or in drafts from doors and windows that are frequently opened. Sudden temperature changes can be detrimental to their lifespan. How to care for your flower delivery Proper care is crucial to extend the life of your flowers during winter. Keep the water fresh and clean by removing wilting flowers or foliage and check the water level daily, topping it up as needed – this helps to prevent bacteria build-up. Every few days, trim the stems at a 45-degree angle to increase the surface area for water uptake and to ensure optimal water absorption. Flowers bring life, colour, and joy to any space, a welcome contrast to the winter landscape. Order flowers online or visit Court Florist's flower and gift shop at 143 Victoria Street in Christchurch, New Zealand. If you would like some guidance on which flowers to order or have a special request for a flower arrangement or delivery, call Court Florist's team on 03 379 8255 . Sometimes mums do things purely with love, and other times it’s done with love but behind a veil of exhaustion and ‘if I have to tell you one more time’ frustration. They should be showered with gifts every day of the week for keeping the show on the road. However, Mother’s Day 2024 falls on Sunday 12th May in New Zealand, a special day to show appreciation for all she does. Mums are typically rather good at doing things for other people and putting themselves at the bottom of the list, which makes it a struggle to find the perfect gift for Mother’s Day. It’s not through lack of wanting to, rather it’s a challenge to find a tangible way to express the level of gratitude for the woman who does so much. So, if you have one of these hard-to-buy-for mums and are met with a ‘don’t worry about getting me anything’, Court Florist are here to inspire and help you find a Mother’s Day gift she will love. Fresh flower delivery for Christchurch mums Few things brighten a home and lift the spirits quite like a beautiful bouquet of fresh flowers . Imagine the joy when she receives a stunning arrangement of blooms, meticulously curated by one of the best florist's in Christchurch, New Zealand. With same-day flower delivery available, Court Florist makes it easy to surprise her with a burst of colour and fragrance hand delivered to her doorstep. Terrarium For the mum with a green thumb or a penchant for unique decor, a terrarium is a fabulous choice . These miniature gardens make a striking addition to a house plant display bringing a touch of nature indoors. Terrariums, or bottle gardens, are long lasting, mess-free and easy to care for, and are both calming and therapeutic. A really lovely gift for busy mums.

Easter is a time of spiritual reflection and a promise of new life, and an important religious celebration for many, and like all other special occasions, flowers play an important role. From the colourful delight of tulips to the joyful vibrancy of sunflowers, fresh flowers are a symbol of new beginnings and renewal; a burst of colour and a heaven-sent fragrance, make Easter gatherings even more memorable. To help you florally prepare your home for Easter ready for a gathering of family and friends over the long weekend, here are Court Florist’s Christchurch florists’ favourites: Fill your home with blooms Of course we are going to say fill your home with flowers, but flowers deliver an abundance of cheer and goodwill – the key ingredients of any successful social gathering. A large bouquet of flowers such as the Jewel Tones Bouquet makes a stunning focal point for the main room you are entertaining in. Place smaller posies or sprigs in complementing colours in mismatched mason jars and vases around your home in less expected places – in the bathroom, on a bookcase shelf etc. This additional detail is delightful. For a cohesive and incredibly effective way to make Easter flower arrangements stylish is to use one colour across the different flower arrangements in your home. New Zealand’s climate ensures there is a large variety of fresh flowers in season , so you can have the same colours yet different shaped petals, tones and textures of flowers to make a dramatic impact.
